The University Library of Rijeka is the central library of the University of Rijeka and the City of Rijeka, Primorje-Gorski kotar County and Lika-Senj County, which promotes the identity of its university, city, region and nation by introducing the public to their written heritage.
The University Library of Rijeka is the oldest cultural and educational institution in Rijeka. Its history dates back to November 27, 1627, when the Jesuits in Rijeka founded a college and grammar school and an associated library.
The books of the Jesuit College are the foundation of the University Library and today the only fully preserved Jesuit library in Croatia, which contains 14 titles of incunabula and 145 titles of books of the 16th century.
The Scientific Library was founded in 1949, when books of a scientific nature entered the fund of the former Biblioteca Civica, the city library. On May 9, 1979,the Scientific Library became an associate member of the University of Rijeka, and in 1995 it changed its name to what it bears today -the University Library of Rijeka.
The building in which today’s library is located was built in 1887 in the then Via Clotilde inferiore (today Dolac 1) for the needs of the women’s eight-year civic school Emma Brentari, according to the project of the Trieste architect Giacomo Zammatio. The book fund of the University Library consist of e-sources, basic and special collections and digitized material.
